Way of lao tzu6/29/2023 ![]() Thus the notion of the Tao recaptures the earlier Chinese concept of Yin and Yang, the polarities running through all things. The original polarity is that of being and non-being, and it will be found to interplay throughout the world, with non-being (emptiness, what is not) having as much significance as does being (the fullness of things, what is). Even the Tao which we are trying to talk about here eludes our words. ![]() Our naming (describing) of things always falls short of the way things are, since things are not limited as our language presupposes. We humans need to discover that Way (Tao), which is immanent in all aspects of the world, not a rule imposed from without and we need to fit into it, letting things take their course, not exerting ourselves in opposition to it by trying to bend things to our will. In its very poetic form it teaches that there is a dynamic, cosmic structure underlying everything that happens in the world. The Tao te Ching (literally, “the classic of the way of virtue”) is attributed to Lao Tzu, though scholars disagree about his actual existence. ![]()

Wired for story by lisa cron6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() We’ve been trained to be so fearful of penning anything that feels like “ugly writing” that we often end up creating something far worse. It is heartbreaking how many writers suffer from the deep rooted, often crippling fear of not “writing beautifully” from the very first iteration of the very first sentence on the very first page of the novel. ![]() Beautiful writing is often equated with talent, and without talent, why write at all? It’s this: The myth that beautiful writing is what makes you a real writer, and (an even more damaging belief) that the beautiful writing comes first, before everything else. I’m beginning this month with the overarching granddaddy of them all – the myth that derails otherwise riveting stories before they’re even created. This all too common phenomenon is something I’m going to be deconstructing, myth by myth, for the next several months in my columns here. ![]() ![]() When it comes to writing, you may have done everything you’ve been taught to do with utter perfection, and precisely because of that, it turns out you’ve written something that is flat, boring and uninvolving. ![]()

Olive again book review6/29/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Even though everyone knows everyone else’s business, murder, paedophilia, suicide, armed robbery, arson and hostage-taking all take place in Crosby, and so do heartbreak and true love. It’s not only that this small town is the setting for high drama. Within these taut, laconic little tales, there is room for characters to show feeling from several levels of their being It’s just a place, as Betty’s life (two disastrous marriages, brain-damaged son, dire poverty) is “just a life”, but Strout persuades us that Crosby matters, and so do its people. The town of Crosby, Maine, in which Elizabeth Strout set her acclaimed story-sequence-cum-novel Olive Kitteridge and now sets this sequel, Olive, Again, lies on a beautiful stretch of coast it is remote, provincial, very far from centres of power or fashion or big business. ![]() She hands her a Kleenex and asks about her life. But when one day Betty shows up crying over the death of the headteacher on whom she had a crush, back when Olive was teaching her maths in high school, Olive softens. She really, really dislikes her for having dropped the cigarette butt that caused Olive to bend over, get dizzy and fall and subsequently decide she’d better move into sheltered housing. She dislikes her for her Republican bumper sticker. ![]() She dislikes Betty for the hostility with which she treats the other carer, a Somali woman. O live Kitteridge doesn’t much like Betty, the “nursing aide” assigned to her after her heart attack. ![]()
